Saint Anthony the Great was an Egyptian monk and ascetic, regarded as the founder of Christian monasticism and the first of the Desert Fathers.

Born around 251 AD in Coma, Lower Egypt, he came from a wealthy Christian family. Following the death of his parents, Anthony gave away his possessions to those in need and devoted his life entirely to faith, prayer, and solitude.

According to his life story, he endured numerous trials and temptations, yet remained steadfast in his faith. Through his spiritual strength, piety, and devotion, he became renowned as a wise spiritual guide. Many people sought him out for advice, comfort, and healing.

Saint Anthony devoted his life to the Christian faith and had a profound influence on the development of the monastic tradition.

The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Anthony the Great on January 17 – St. Anthony’s Day.
